A few days ago, Zach decided to post an old bedroom improv song – “Anal Fin’s Fatal Sin”, a one-off recording featuring myself, the Bassturd, Ron, and Zach. The details of the recording method are sort of fuzzy. We can agree that it was “laid down on tape” in Ron’s room on Church Street in Iowa City, 1996. Ron’s room was small, maybe about 10×10 feet and most of it was taken up by his bed, so we all sat on his bed and played Nintendo64, drank Strohs Light and made up songs. Maria lived upstairs. Next door lived a guy named Hung, who was always going mountain biking, occasionally setting the communal kitchen on fire, periodically getting super-drunk before going to the library and never wearing a shirt.
On this particular song I’m pretty sure I played guitar, which I think went on as an overdub after the initial improv tracks. the keyboard part and my lyrics were recorded simultaneously and were mostly improvised. However, I think I borrowed the opening line from a Grumpy song. Grumpy was another partially improvised recording project featuring Adam, Zach and myself (my part in the group was limited to being passed out in the room while the songs were being recorded). Grumpy was recorded a few blocks from Ron’s, in Zach and Hagan’s basement apartment on the corner of Gilbert and Fairchild. Here’s a map if you’re confused. Zach and Hagan’s was a two bedroom apartment with a futon in the kitchen, so we all sat around in the kitchen and shot avant garde video projects, drank Strohs Light and made up songs.
Anyway, a few days ago Luke did a quick remix of Fatal Sin. He really did a good job of bringing out the ridiculous conversation going on in the background. Apparently, the Bassturd doesn’t care for the environment.
Here are the results:

Ron tells me that the first line is actually from a Bassturd song. Can anyone clarify this?

Ahem, the first line is from a Dongbroth song that later became a Bassturd song! It was called Monkey Bars.
